Scale
For the French Toast:
- 8 slices of thick bread (such as brioche, challah, or Texas toast)
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons butter (for cooking)
For the Apple Topping:
- 2 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/4 cup water (or apple cider)
- Optional: 1 tablespoon maple syrup
Optional Toppings:
- Powdered sugar
- Maple syrup
- Whipped cream
- Chopped nuts (such as walnuts or pecans)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Apple Topping
- Heat the Butter: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Cook the Apples: Add the sliced apples to the skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples start to soften.
- Add Sweeteners and Spices: Stir in the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and water (or apple cider). Cook for another 5-7 minutes, until the apples are tender and the sauce has thickened slightly. For a richer flavor, drizzle in 1 tablespoon of maple syrup during the last minute of cooking.
- Keep Warm: Reduce the heat to low and keep the apple topping warm while you prepare the French toast.
Step 2: Prepare the Custard
- Whisk the Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined.
- Soak the Bread: Dip each slice of bread into the custard mixture, letting it soak for about 20-30 seconds on each side. This will ensure the bread absorbs the custard for a rich, flavorful French toast.
Step 3: Cook the French Toast
- Heat the Skillet: Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and allow it to melt and coat the pan.
- Cook the Bread: Place the soaked bread slices onto the skillet, cooking for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Depending on the size of your skillet, you may need to cook the French toast in batches. Add more butter to the pan as needed for each batch.
- Keep Warm: Place the cooked French toast on a baking sheet in a 200°F (93°C) oven to keep warm while you finish cooking the remaining slices.
Step 4: Assemble and Serve
- Plate the French Toast: Place two slices of French toast on each plate.
- Add the Apple Topping: Spoon the warm apple topping generously over the French toast.
- Garnish: Sprinkle with powdered sugar, drizzle with maple syrup, or add a dollop of whipped cream for extra indulgence. Garnish with chopped nuts if desired.
- Serve Immediately: Serve the Apple Cinnamon French Toast warm and enjoy!
