Cabbage Beef Bake

  • Author: Olivia
  • Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cabbage Beef Bake:

  • 1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 medium head of cabbage, chopped
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup cooked rice (optional, for extra heartiness)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for topping)

For Garnish (Optional):

  • Fresh parsley, chopped
  • Red pepper flakes (for heat)
  • Grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

  1. Chop the Cabbage: Start by chopping the cabbage into bite-sized pieces. You can remove the tough core and discard it, using only the leafy parts for the bake.
  2. Cook the Rice (Optional): If you’re adding rice to the bake, cook 1 cup of rice according to the package instructions and set it aside.

Step 2: Cook the Beef Mixture

  1. Sauté the Onion and Garlic: In a large skillet or sauté pan, heat a tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
  2. Cook the Ground Beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a spatula. Cook until browned and fully cooked, about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
  3. Add the Seasonings: Stir in the dried oregano, smoked paprika, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 2 more minutes to allow the spices to bloom and enhance the flavor.

Step 3: Prepare the Sauce

  1. Add Tomatoes and Sauce: Stir in the diced tomatoes (with their juice), tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Mix well to combine. Add the Worcestershire sauce for an extra depth of flavor.
  2. Simmer the Sauce: Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. If the sauce is too thick, you can add a splash of water or beef broth to loosen it up.

Step 4: Assemble the Cabbage Beef Bake

  1. Layer the Cabbage and Beef: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large 9×13-inch baking dish, spread a layer of chopped cabbage across the bottom. Spoon half of the beef and tomato mixture over the cabbage. Repeat with another layer of cabbage and the remaining beef mixture.
  2. Add Optional Rice: If you’re including rice, sprinkle the cooked rice evenly over the top layer of beef.

Step 5: Bake the Casserole

  1. Bake Covered: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. This allows the cabbage to soften and the flavors to meld.
  2. Add Cheese (Optional): Remove the foil and sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top. Return the dish to the oven and bake uncovered for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy

  1. Garnish: Once the casserole is done, remove it from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley, a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese, or a dash of red pepper flakes for extra flavor.
  2. Serve: Scoop the Cabbage Beef Bake onto plates and serve hot. Enjoy this hearty and comforting dish with a side of crusty bread or a fresh salad.
