Scale
For the Cabbage Beef Bake:
- 1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey)
- 1 large onion, diced
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 medium head of cabbage, chopped
- 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
- 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup cooked rice (optional, for extra heartiness)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for topping)
For Garnish (Optional):
- Fresh parsley, chopped
- Red pepper flakes (for heat)
- Grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients
- Chop the Cabbage: Start by chopping the cabbage into bite-sized pieces. You can remove the tough core and discard it, using only the leafy parts for the bake.
- Cook the Rice (Optional): If you’re adding rice to the bake, cook 1 cup of rice according to the package instructions and set it aside.
Step 2: Cook the Beef Mixture
- Sauté the Onion and Garlic: In a large skillet or sauté pan, heat a tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
- Cook the Ground Beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a spatula. Cook until browned and fully cooked, about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
- Add the Seasonings: Stir in the dried oregano, smoked paprika, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 2 more minutes to allow the spices to bloom and enhance the flavor.
Step 3: Prepare the Sauce
- Add Tomatoes and Sauce: Stir in the diced tomatoes (with their juice), tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Mix well to combine. Add the Worcestershire sauce for an extra depth of flavor.
- Simmer the Sauce: Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. If the sauce is too thick, you can add a splash of water or beef broth to loosen it up.
Step 4: Assemble the Cabbage Beef Bake
- Layer the Cabbage and Beef: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large 9×13-inch baking dish, spread a layer of chopped cabbage across the bottom. Spoon half of the beef and tomato mixture over the cabbage. Repeat with another layer of cabbage and the remaining beef mixture.
- Add Optional Rice: If you’re including rice, sprinkle the cooked rice evenly over the top layer of beef.
Step 5: Bake the Casserole
- Bake Covered: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. This allows the cabbage to soften and the flavors to meld.
- Add Cheese (Optional): Remove the foil and sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top. Return the dish to the oven and bake uncovered for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Step 6: Serve and Enjoy
- Garnish: Once the casserole is done, remove it from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley, a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese, or a dash of red pepper flakes for extra flavor.
- Serve: Scoop the Cabbage Beef Bake onto plates and serve hot. Enjoy this hearty and comforting dish with a side of crusty bread or a fresh salad.
