Ingredients
For the Caramelized Onions:
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon sugar (optional, to help with caramelization)
For the Dip Base:
- 1 cup sour cream
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- ½ teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice (optional, for extra tang)
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives (plus more for garnish)
Instructions
Step 1: Caramelize the Onions
-
Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat.
-
Add the thinly sliced onions, salt, and pepper, stirring to coat in the butter mixture.
-
Cook for 25-30 minutes, stirring every few minutes to prevent burning. The onions should turn a deep golden brown and develop a sweet, rich flavor.
-
Add Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and sugar (if using). Stir well and cook for another 5 minutes until fully caramelized.
-
Remove from heat and let the onions cool completely before adding to the dip.
Step 2: Mix the Dip Base
-
In a large bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, salt, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and lemon juice. Stir until smooth.
-
Fold in the cooled caramelized onions, mixing well to distribute the flavors evenly.
-
Stir in chopped fresh chives for a touch of freshness.
Step 3: Chill and Serve
-
Cover and refrigerate the dip for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. The longer it chills, the better it tastes!
-
Garnish with additional chopped chives before serving.
-
Serve with potato chips, crackers, fresh veggies, or warm toasted bread.
