For the chicken:
- 1 lb (450g) boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- Vegetable oil, for frying
For the honey garlic sauce:
- 1/3 cup honey
- 1/4 cup soy sauce (low-sodium preferred)
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar or white vinegar
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon ginger, grated
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (slurry for thickening)
- Optional: 1/2 teaspoon red chili flakes for a spicy kick
Optional garnish:
- Sesame seeds
- Sliced green onions
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Chicken
- In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well.
- Dip the chicken pieces into the beaten eggs, ensuring each piece is coated.
- Dredge the egg-coated chicken in the flour mixture, pressing lightly to coat evenly. Shake off any excess flour.
Step 2: Fry the Chicken
- Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the chicken in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Cook each batch for 4–5 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove the chicken from the oil and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Step 3: Make the Honey Garlic Sauce
- In a medium saucepan, combine honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, and grated ginger.
- Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it begins to simmer.
- Add the cornstarch slurry and stir until the sauce thickens, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat.
Step 4: Toss the Chicken in the Sauce
- Place the fried chicken pieces in a large bowl. Pour the honey garlic sauce over the chicken and toss gently to coat evenly.
- Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions for a finishing touch.
Step 5: Serve and Enjoy
- Serve the Honey Garlic Chicken immediately over steamed rice or noodles. Pair it with steamed broccoli or bok choy for a complete meal.
