Chocolate Puff Pastry

  • Author: Olivia
  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: Makes about 8 to 10 pastries (depending on size) 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package of store-bought puff pastry (usually contains 2 sheets)
  • 100g (about 3.5 oz) of dark, milk, or white chocolate (choose according to your preference)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar (optional, for sprinkling)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional, for flavor)
  • A pinch of salt (optional, for balancing sweetness)
  • Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven Begin by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C). This ensures the oven is hot enough to give the puff pastry that perfect golden, crispy finish.

Step 2: Prepare the Puff Pastry Unroll the puff pastry sheets on a clean, flat surface. Using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, slice each sheet into 4-5 rectangles (depending on the size of pastries you prefer). You’ll need 8 to 10 rectangles in total.

Step 3: Prepare the Chocolate Filling Break the chocolate into small pieces and place it in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat the chocolate in the microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring after each one, until it’s completely melted and smooth. You can also melt the chocolate using a double boiler on the stove if you prefer. Stir in vanilla extract and a pinch of salt if desired.

Step 4: Assemble the Pastries Spoon about one tablespoon of melted chocolate into the center of each puff pastry rectangle. Be sure to leave a small border around the edges to prevent the filling from spilling out. If you want a more intense chocolate flavor, you can add additional layers of chocolate.

Step 5: Fold the Pastry Fold each rectangle of puff pastry over the chocolate filling to create a sealed packet. Gently press the edges to seal the pastry, ensuring the chocolate stays inside. You can also use a fork to crimp the edges, giving the pastries a nice decorative touch.

Step 6: Brush with Egg Wash Beat the egg in a small bowl and brush a thin layer over the top of each pastry. This will give the pastries a golden, shiny finish when baked. If you like a bit of sweetness, you can sprinkle a little sugar on top of the egg wash before baking.

Step 7: Bake the Pastries Place the pastries on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden and crisp. Keep an eye on them towards the end of baking to ensure they don’t over-brown.

Step 8: Cool and Serve Once baked, remove the pastries from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack for a few minutes. They’re best enjoyed warm but can also be stored and reheated later. For extra indulgence, dust with powdered sugar before serving.
