Ingredients
- 6 medium Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored, and thickly sliced
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup apple juice or cider (unsweetened)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
- Pinch of salt
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Instructions
Step 1
Start by preparing your apples. Peel them, core them, and cut them into thick slices. You want them to be sturdy enough to hold up to cooking, so avoid super thin slices.
Step 2
In a large skillet, preferably cast iron, melt the butter over medium heat. Let it melt fully until it begins to foam slightly but avoid browning it.
Step 3
Add the sliced apples to the skillet. Stir to coat each piece in the melted butter. Let them cook for about 6 to 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they just begin to soften.
Step 4
In a small bowl, whisk together the apple juice (or cider) and cornstarch until smooth. This will be your thickening agent.
Step 5
Pour the cornstarch mixture into the skillet, followed by the brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), salt, and lemon juice. Stir everything gently to combine.
Step 6
Let the apples simmer in the sauce over medium-low heat for about 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally. You’re aiming for the sauce to thicken and the apples to become tender but not mushy.
Step 7
Once the apples are cooked to your desired tenderness and the sauce has thickened to a nice syrupy consistency, remove the skillet from heat.
Step 8
Let the fried apples cool slightly before serving. The sauce will continue to thicken as it sits. Serve warm, spooned into bowls, or alongside your favorite meal.
