Crème Brûlée French Toast

  • Author: Olivia
  • Total Time: 45 minutes (plus chilling time)
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the French Toast:

  • 6 thick slices of brioche or challah bread
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp salt

For the Crème Brûlée Topping:

  • ½ cup granulated sugar (for caramelizing)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

Optional Toppings:

  • Fresh berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries)
  • Maple syrup
  • Whipped cream
  • Powdered sugar
  • Caramel or chocolate drizzle

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Custard

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, whole milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined. The mixture should be smooth and slightly frothy.

Step 2: Soak the Bread

Arrange the slices of brioche or challah in a single layer in a greased baking dish or deep tray. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread, ensuring that each slice is well-coated. Lightly press the bread down to help it absorb the liquid. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight for the best results.

Step 3: Preheat the Oven and Prepare the Baking Dish

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish or line a baking sheet with parchment paper. If you soaked the bread in a different container, carefully transfer the slices to the prepared baking dish.

Step 4: Bake the French Toast

Drizzle melted butter over the soaked bread slices and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed up. The edges should be slightly crisp, and the center should be set but soft.

Step 5: Caramelize the Sugar Topping

Once baked, remove the French toast from the oven and evenly sprinkle granulated sugar over the top of each slice. Use a kitchen torch to caramelize the sugar until it forms a crisp, golden crust. If you don’t have a torch, place the toast under the broiler for 1-2 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning.

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy

Let the French toast sit for a minute or two to allow the caramelized sugar to harden. Serve warm with your favorite toppings, such as fresh berries, whipped cream, or a drizzle of maple syrup.
