  • Author: Olivia
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings (20–24 pieces) 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Fried Tortellini:

  • 1 package (9–12 ounces/250–350g) refrigerated or frozen tortellini (cheese, meat, or spinach-filled)
  • 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons milk or water
  • 1 ½ cups (150g) Italian-style breadcrumbs (or panko breadcrumbs with Italian seasoning)
  • ½ cup (50g) grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Optional Dipping Sauces:

  • 1 cup marinara sauce
  • ½ cup ranch dressing
  • ½ cup garlic aioli
  • ½ cup pesto

Optional Garnishes:

  • Grated Parmesan cheese
  • Chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Tortellini

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the tortellini according to package instructions, but reduce the cooking time by 1–2 minutes to keep them slightly firm.
  2. Drain and transfer the tortellini to a baking sheet lined with paper towels to dry and cool.

Step 2: Prepare the Breading Station

  1. In a shallow dish, place the flour.
  2. In a second shallow dish, whisk together the eggs and milk or water.
  3. In a third dish, combine the breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.

Step 3: Bread the Tortellini

  1. Dredge each tortellini in the flour, shaking off any excess.
  2. Dip the floured tortellini into the egg mixture, ensuring it is fully coated.
  3. Press the tortellini into the breadcrumb mixture, coating evenly. Set the breaded tortellini on a plate. Repeat with all tortellini.

Step 4: Heat the Oil

  1. In a deep skillet or heavy-bottomed pot, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Use a kitchen thermometer to maintain a consistent temperature.

Step 5: Fry the Tortellini

  1. Working in batches, carefully add the breaded tortellini to the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan.
  2. Fry for 2–3 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy.
  3. Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried tortellini and transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

Step 6: Serve and Garnish

  1. Transfer the fried tortellini to a serving platter. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese and chopped parsley for garnish.
  2. Serve immediately with your choice of dipping sauces.
