  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the cake:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar
  • 1 tbsp green food coloring (gel recommended)

For the frosting:

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 12 tbsp heavy cream (as needed for consistency)

Optional decorations:

  • Green sprinkles
  • White chocolate shavings
  • Edible gold dust

Instructions

1. Prepare the cake batter

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch cake pans with parchment paper.

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

  • In a large mixing bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

  • Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.

2. Add wet and dry ingredients

  • Mix in the buttermilk, alternating with the dry ingredients, starting and ending with the flour mixture.

  • Stir in the vinegar, then add the green food coloring and mix until fully incorporated. Adjust color as needed.

3. Bake the cake

  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.

  • Bake for 28-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  • Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

4. Make the frosting

  • In a large bowl, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth and creamy.

  • Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing until fluffy.

  • Stir in vanilla extract and add heavy cream as needed to reach a spreadable consistency.

5. Assemble and decorate

  • Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a generous layer of frosting on top.

  • Add the second cake layer and frost the top and sides evenly.

  • Decorate with green sprinkles, white chocolate shavings, or edible gold dust for a festive touch.
