  • Author: Olivia
  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: 10 fried apple pies 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Apple Filling:

  • 2 medium apples, peeled and diced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

For the Dough:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed (or plant-based butter alternative)
  • 1/3 cup cold water (more if needed)

For Frying:

  • Oil for deep frying (vegetable, sunflower, or neutral oil)

Optional:

  • Powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar, for dusting
  • Vanilla glaze (powdered sugar + milk + drop of vanilla extract)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Apple Filling

  • In a small saucepan, combine diced apples, lemon juice, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  • Cook over medium heat for 5–7 minutes until apples begin to soften.
  • Mix cornstarch with water to form a slurry, then stir into the apple mixture.
  • Simmer until thickened (about 2 more minutes), then remove from heat and let cool.

2. Make the Dough

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and sugar.
  • Add cold butter cubes and cut in with a pastry cutter or fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Gradually add cold water and mix until dough forms.
  • Knead briefly, then wrap in plastic and chill for 15–20 minutes.

3. Roll and Fill the Pies

  • On a floured surface, roll out dough to 1/8-inch thickness.
  • Cut into 4×6 inch rectangles or desired shape.
  • Spoon 1–2 tablespoons of cooled apple filling onto one side of each rectangle.
  • Fold over and press edges with a fork to seal tightly.
  • Optional: brush the edges with a little water before sealing for extra hold.

4. Fry the Pies

  • Heat oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C).
  • Carefully place 2–3 pies in the oil at a time, frying for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  • Transfer to paper towels to drain excess oil.

5. Add Toppings

  • Dust with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar while warm.
  • Alternatively, drizzle with a simple vanilla glaze for extra sweetness.
