Onion Rings Chips

  • Author: Olivia
  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 4-6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced into rings
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (regular or panko)
  • 1 tablespoon parmesan cheese (optional, for extra flavor)
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk or regular milk
  • Oil, for frying (vegetable or canola oil works well)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Onions

Start by peeling and slicing the onions into rings. Make sure the rings are relatively thin—around 1/8 inch thick—so they’ll crisp up nicely when fried. Once sliced, separate the rings and set them aside.

Step 2: Make the Dipping Station

In one shallow dish, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. In a separate dish, whisk the eggs and buttermilk together until smooth. In a third dish, add the breadcrumbs and, if using, parmesan cheese. This three-step breading station will help create that signature crispy coating on the onion rings.

Step 3: Coat the Onion Rings

Take each onion ring and dip it into the flour mixture, making sure it’s evenly coated. Next, dip it into the egg and buttermilk mixture, allowing any excess to drip off. Finally, coat the onion ring with breadcrumbs, pressing gently to ensure the breadcrumbs stick well. Repeat this process for all the onion rings.

Step 4: Heat the Oil

In a large, deep skillet or frying pan, heat enough oil to submerge the onion rings (about 1-2 inches of oil). Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C), which is the ideal temperature for frying crispy snacks. If you don’t have a thermometer, you can test the oil by dropping a small piece of bread in; if it sizzles and turns golden within 30 seconds, the oil is ready.

Step 5: Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully add the coated onion rings to the hot oil, a few at a time, to avoid overcrowding. Fry them for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they’re golden brown and crispy. Remove the onion rings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.

Step 6: Slice and Serve

Once all the onion rings are fried, slice them into smaller chip-sized pieces using a knife or by gently breaking them apart with your hands. You’ll have delicious, crispy onion ring chips ready to serve!
