  • ½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1 tablespoon fresh orange zest
  • ½ cup heavy cream (plus extra for brushing)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Orange Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • ½ teaspoon orange zest (optional for extra flavor)

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat and prep

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C)

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper

Step 2: Mix dry ingredients

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt

  • Add orange zest and stir to combine

Step 3: Cut in the butter

  • Add cold cubed butter to the dry ingredients

  • Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs

Step 4: Combine wet ingredients

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together cream, egg, orange juice, and vanilla extract

Step 5: Mix the dough

  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture

  • Stir gently with a spatula or wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms

  • Do not overmix

Step 6: Shape the dough

  • Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface

  • Gently press into a circle about ¾-inch thick

  • Cut into 8 wedges and transfer to the prepared baking sheet

Step 7: Brush and bake

  • Brush the tops of the scones with a little extra cream for a golden finish

  • Bake for 16–18 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean

  • Cool on a wire rack before glazing

Step 8: Make the orange glaze

  • In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar and orange juice until smooth

  • Add more juice or sugar as needed to adjust consistency

Step 9: Glaze the scones

  • Drizzle or spoon the glaze over cooled scones

  • Let the glaze set for a few minutes before serving
