Instructions
Making Persian Jeweled Rice can be a delightful experience. Follow these steps to create this incredible dish:
1. Rinse the Rice: Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming sticky.
2. Soak the Rice: Soak the rinsed rice in water for at least 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.
3. Prepare Saffron: In a small bowl, steep the saffron threads in 2 tablespoons of boiling water. Let it sit while you prepare the other ingredients.
4. Cook the Rice: In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Add the soaked rice and salt. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the rice is partially cooked. Drain the rice and set aside.
5. Prepare the Topping: In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil or butter over medium heat. Add the chopped pistachios, slivered almonds, and caramelized onions if using. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until fragrant.
6. Combine Ingredients: In a large serving bowl, layer half of the partially cooked rice. Drizzle half of the saffron water over the rice. Then, add half of the sautéed nut mixture and half of the dried fruits. Repeat the layers with the remaining rice, saffron water, nuts, and dried fruits.
7. Steam the Rice: Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or a lid. Cook on low heat for about 30 minutes, allowing the rice to steam and absorb flavors.
8. Fluff the Rice: After steaming, carefully fluff the rice with a fork to mix in the ingredients without breaking the grains.
9. Serve: Transfer the Persian Jeweled Rice to a serving platter and garnish with fresh herbs.
