Ingredients
– 1 can sardines in olive oil (or your preferred oil)
– 2 slices of whole-grain bread (or any bread of your choice)
– 1 tablespoon mayonnaise (or as desired)
– 1 tablespoon mustard (optional)
– 1/4 cup cucumber, thinly sliced
– 1/4 cup lettuce or spinach
– 1 small tomato, sliced
– Salt and pepper to taste
– Fresh herbs (e.g., dill or parsley), for garnish
– Lemon wedges (optional, for serving)
Instructions
Creating your Sardine Sandwich is straightforward. Follow these simple steps:
1. Open Sardines: Carefully open the can of sardines and drain the oil (or keep it for richness, if desired).
2. Prepare Bread: Toast your bread slices as per your preference, either lightly or until crispy.
3. Spread Condiments: Evenly spread mayonnaise and mustard on one side of each slice of bread. Adjust quantities to your liking!
4. Layer Sardines: Place the sardines on one slice of the bread. You can break them up slightly or leave them whole, depending on your texture preference.
5. Add Vegetables: Layer on the sliced cucumber, lettuce, and tomato. Feel free to add as much or as little as you like!
6. Season: Sprinkle salt and pepper to taste. Fresh herbs can also be added at this stage for an aromatic touch.
7. Build the Sandwich: Place the second slice of bread, condiment-side-down, on top of the veggies and sardines.
8. Slice and Serve: Cut the sandwich in half or quarters for easier consumption.
9. Optional Garnish: Serve with lemon wedges on the side for an added zest.
