Spicy Lemon Garlic Shrimp

  • Author: Olivia
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • Shrimp: You’ll need about 1 lb (450 grams) of large, peeled, and deveined shrimp. Frozen shrimp works just fine, but make sure to thaw them beforehand.
  • Olive Oil: For searing the shrimp and giving them a lovely crispy exterior.
  • Butter: Adds richness and enhances the garlic and lemon flavors in the sauce.
  • Garlic: Fresh garlic cloves are a must for this recipe. They infuse the shrimp with a savory flavor and aroma.
  • Lemon: Both the zest and the juice of the lemon are used. The zest provides a punch of citrus aroma, while the juice gives the shrimp a tangy brightness.
  • Red Pepper Flakes: These give the shrimp a spicy kick. Adjust the quantity based on your heat tolerance.
  • Paprika: Adds depth of flavor and a mild smokiness that complements the spiciness.
  • Salt and Pepper: For seasoning and bringing out the flavors.
  • Fresh Parsley: For garnish and a burst of freshness.

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Shrimp

If using frozen shrimp, begin by thawing them properly. To do so, place the shrimp in a bowl of cold water and let them sit for 15-20 minutes. Once thawed, pat the shrimp dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This ensures they sear nicely in the pan.

Step 2: Make the Lemon Garlic Sauce

In a small bowl, combine the fresh lemon juice, lemon zest, and red pepper flakes. Set it aside so it’s ready to be added to the shrimp later. This mixture will create that delicious tangy, spicy kick we’re aiming for.

Step 3: Season the Shrimp

Season the shrimp with salt, pepper, and paprika. Toss them gently to coat the shrimp evenly with the seasonings. The paprika adds a subtle smokiness, while the salt and pepper elevate the natural sweetness of the shrimp.

Step 4: Cook the Shrimp

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add olive oil. Once the oil is hot, add the shrimp in a single layer, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. You want to sear the shrimp rather than steam them. Cook for about 2 minutes on each side, or until the shrimp turn pink and opaque. Remove the shrimp from the skillet and set them aside.

Step 5: Prepare the Garlic Sauce

In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium. Add butter and let it melt. Once melted, add the minced garlic. Stir the garlic constantly to prevent it from burning. Cook for about 1-2 minutes until the garlic becomes fragrant.

Step 6: Combine the Sauce and Shrimp

Add the lemon juice, lemon zest, and red pepper flake mixture to the skillet with the garlic. Stir to combine, and let the sauce simmer for another 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

Step 7: Return the Shrimp to the Pan

Add the cooked shrimp back to the skillet, tossing them in the lemon garlic sauce. Make sure every shrimp is coated in the delicious sauce. Let them cook in the sauce for an additional minute or so to absorb all the flavors.

Step 8: Garnish and Serve

Once the shrimp are nicely coated with the sauce, remove the pan from the heat. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley for color and an extra layer of freshness. Serve immediately with your favorite sides.
