  • Author: Olivia
  • Total Time: 35 minutes

Ingredients

– 2 cups sushi rice
– 2 ½ cups water
– ½ cup rice vinegar
– 1 tablespoon sugar
– 1 teaspoon salt
– Nori sheets (seaweed)
– 1 medium cucumber, julienned
– 1 avocado, sliced
– 1 cup cooked shrimp or crab (or protein of your choice)
– Soy sauce (for serving)
– Pickled ginger (optional)
– Wasabi (optional)
– Sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

Making sushi rolls can be a straightforward process if you follow these steps:

1. Rinse the Sushi Rice: Place sushi rice in a bowl and rinse under cold water until the water runs clear, removing excess starch.

2. Cook the Rice: Combine rinsed rice and water in a rice cooker or a pot. Cook according to the rice cooker instructions or on medium heat for about 20 minutes, then let it sit off the heat for 10 minutes.

3. Season the Rice: In a small saucepan, combine rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Heat gently until sugar dissolves. Pour this mixture over the cooked rice and mix gently, being careful not to mush the rice.

4. Prepare Fillings: While the rice cools, prepare your fillings. Slice the cucumber into julienne strips, slice the avocado, and prepare any protein.

5. Lay Out Your Nori: Place a sheet of nori on a clean bamboo sushi mat with the shiny side down.

6. Spread the Rice: Wet your hands to prevent sticking and spread about one cup of sushi rice evenly over the nori, leaving about an inch at the top edge.

7. Add Fillings: Lay your desired fillings in a line across the middle of the rice.

8. Roll the Sushi: Start rolling the sushi away from you, using the bamboo mat to help guide the roll. Apply gentle pressure to keep it tight.

9. Seal the Roll: Use a little bit of water on the top edge of the nori to seal the roll.

10. Slice the Rolls: Use a sharp, wet knife to slice the roll into bite-sized pieces.

11. Serve: Arrange sushi rolls on a platter. Serve with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi on the side.

Following these steps will help you create beautiful and delicious sushi rolls that are sure to impress!
