Ultimate Turkey Melt Sandwich

  • Author: Olivia
  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 4 sandwiches 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Sandwich:

  • 8 slices of bread (sourdough, whole wheat, rye, or your favorite)
  • 8 ounces of sliced turkey (cooked turkey breast or deli turkey)
  • 4 slices of cheddar cheese (or your preferred cheese)
  • 4 slices of Swiss cheese (optional, for extra cheesiness)
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise (divided)
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

Optional Add-Ins:

  • 4 slices of cooked bacon
  • ½ cup caramelized onions
  • ½ avocado, sliced
  • ¼ cup cranberry sauce
  • 4 tomato slices

For Serving:

  • Dill pickles
  • Potato chips
  • Tomato soup

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

  1. Slice the bread and cheese: If you’re using a whole loaf of bread, slice it evenly into 8 slices. Have your cheese, turkey, and any additional toppings ready to go.
  2. Soften the butter: Leave the butter at room temperature for a few minutes to make it easier to spread.

Step 2: Build the Sandwich

  1. Spread the condiments: Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on one side of each slice of bread. Optionally, add Dijon mustard on one slice for a tangy kick.
  2. Layer the fillings: On 4 slices of bread (the bottom halves), layer a slice of cheddar cheese, a few slices of turkey, and any additional toppings, such as bacon, caramelized onions, or tomato. Top with another slice of cheese (Swiss or cheddar) and place the remaining bread slices on top, mayonnaise side facing inward.

Step 3: Butter the Bread

  1. Butter the outside: Spread a thin, even layer of softened butter on the outside of each sandwich. This will help create a crispy, golden crust when cooked.

Step 4: Cook the Sandwich

  1. Heat the skillet: Place a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. If you’re making multiple sandwiches, work in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan.
  2. Cook the sandwich: Place the sandwiches in the skillet, buttered side down. Cook for 3-4 minutes on the first side, pressing gently with a spatula to ensure even browning.
  3. Flip and finish: Flip the sandwiches and cook for another 2-3 minutes on the other side, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is fully melted. Adjust the heat as needed to prevent burning.

Step 5: Slice and Serve

  1. Slice the sandwiches: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them cool for 1-2 minutes. Slice them in half diagonally for a classic presentation.
  2. Serve: Serve the turkey melts warm with a side of dill pickles, potato chips, or a bowl of tomato soup for dipping.
