Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 large onion, finely diced
- ½ cup beef broth (for extra flavor)
- 12 slider buns or dinner rolls
- 6 slices American cheese (optional)
- 12 dill pickle slices
- 2 tablespoons mustard or ketchup (optional)
Instructions
In a bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well but do not overwork the meat, as this can make the patties tough.
On a sheet of parchment paper or plastic wrap, press the beef into a ¼-inch thick rectangle, roughly the size of a 9×13-inch baking dish. Use a knife or pizza cutter to score the beef into 12 small square patties without cutting all the way through.
Finely dice the onion and spread it evenly across a large skillet or griddle. Pour the beef broth over the onions to help them steam and soften.
Place the sheet of ground beef on top of the onions, aligning the squares with the onions underneath. Cook over medium heat for about 5 minutes, allowing the steam from the onions to cook the patties.
Place the top halves of the slider buns directly over the beef patties while they cook. This allows them to absorb the steam and soften, just like White Castle’s signature style.
Once the beef is fully cooked, remove it from the heat. Cut along the scored lines to separate the individual sliders. Place each patty on the bottom half of a bun. Add a slice of cheese, a pickle, and mustard or ketchup, if desired.
Serve the sliders warm, and enjoy your homemade White Castle experience!
